Development permit approved for second building in north-end Nanaimo apartment complex

NANAIMO — The second and final phase of a substantial housing development in the city’s north end just received approval for a development permit for the second time.

The proposal is for an 86-unit, six-storey multi-family rental building on the south end of 6330 McRobb Ave., with phase one of the 50-unit Dover Ridge apartment building completed in 2016 on the north side of the lot.

A development permit for this project was originally approved in 2022 but lapsed, and now the developer, Camargue Properties Inc., wants to proceed with the plan as previously approved.

This adds to a number of new residential developments in the area, including another multi-family apartment building being constructed to the south at 6340 McRobb Ave.

The new development will be a mix of studio, one, two, and three-bedroom units, with a majority of the parking provided underground with some expanded parking on the surface level.

Amenities include two outdoor spaces, improved landscaping, outdoor seating, and short-term bicycle parking. A common indoor amenity space as well as a rooftop gathering space in the building’s northeast corner is also being proposed.

The proposed building site is surrounded by multi-family residential developments within the Woodgrove Urban Centre, and a short distance from a library, schools, fields and parts.

A building height variance of 5.6 metres was permitted, with the developers saying it’s needed to provide the permitted density onsite while having a more compact building footprint.

The development permit was approved unanimously during the regular council meeting on Monday, Sept. 23.
