Construction to begin on seniors affordable housing project in Bowser

BOWSER — Construction of an independent rental housing complex to be built north of Qualicum Beach appears to be just around the corner.

Bowser Seniors Housing Society (BSHS) received official approval from BC Housing earlier this month to start construction on Lighthouse Villa, a 22-unit ground-level apartment complex in the Bowser village core.

Last week the Regional District of Nanaimo’s board of directors formally authorized a bylaw to enter into a housing agreement to advance the development.

BC Housing anticipates construction of Lighthouse Villa, to be located adjacent to Bowser’s commercial core Magnolia Court, will begin this fall, with occupancy targeted for the winter of 2026.

Eligibility to reside in Lighthouse Villa is determined through income and assets held, according to BSHS.

Four of the units will be set at shelter rates, seven units at a federally determined market rate, while 11 suites will be established at rent-geared-to-income rates.

BSHS noted it raised just over $400,000 toward the project.

Applications to reside in the subsidized units Lighthouse Villa will be available through BC Housing, which the agency stated won’t be open for applicants until opening of the building nears.
