Indigenous Forestry Conference a success

First Nations and forest industry leaders spent the past two days in deep discussions at the Best Western Barclay.
Organized by the Huu-ay-aht and Tseshaht First Nations, the meetings and discussions focussed on strategic partnerships, obtaining capital, and understanding each other.
Organizer Trevor Cootes said the inaugural Indigenous Forestry Conference was an opportunity to create a better future for the forest industry.
“It’s definitely not what it was before but that’s fine as we were not on a good track,” he said. “You can’t take out the wood like we did before. You’re always going to need fibre for whatever. I believe that’s always gonna be there. There’s always going to be an opportunity for it to be a sustainable, profitable business that provide good paying jobs.”
More than 150 people attended the conference and planning has already begun to make it an annual event.
