NANAIMO — Multiple charges have been laid in connection to a New Year’s Day shooting in the city’s south end.

The charges stem from a serious assault at the DBL Disposal Services facility on Tenth St., which occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2024.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said police arrived around 7 a.m., found a man with significant injuries and after securing him and the scene, began an investigation.

“Since that time, the Nanaimo Serious Crime Unit took hold of the investigation, and [Wednesday, Aug. 14] they arrested 47-year-old Jeffery [Andrew] Benvin without incident.”

Benvin faces charges of aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent to disfigure and using a firearm while committing an indictable offence.

He was held in police custody overnight and is due to appear in court on Thursday, Aug. 15.

Benvin’s criminal history includes convictions for possession for the purpose of trafficking in 2022, as well as theft under $5,000 in 2016.

He also has around a dozen infractions of the Motor Vehicle Act including speeding and using a device while driving.

O’Brien said the victim, a 43-year-old man, continues to recover from the incident.

“The victim was transported by air ambulance to Victoria after the shooting, remained in hospital for some time and has since been released from hospital.”

Police had originally said one person was arrested the morning of the incident and remained in police custody, however, O’Brien was unable to confirm whether the person was Benvin.

He did say the person arrested was subsequently released pending further investigation.
