Collisions increase at Nanaimo’s highest crash intersections

NANAIMO — While knocked off the list of having the most crashes on Vancouver Island, more collisions occurred at Nanaimo’s busiest intersections last year.

Newly released ICBC data showed the Island Hwy./Mostar Rd./Metral Dr. intersection, including Rutherford Rd., had the most crashes in the city last year with 73, second only on Vancouver Island to Saanich’s Douglas St./McKenzie Ave. intersection where 86 crashes were recorded.

The north Nanaimo intersection of the Island Hwy. at Hammond Bay Rd., monitored by a speed and red light camera, topped the most crashes list on Vancouver Island the previous two years.

Sixty-eight crashes were reported last year on the Nanaimo Parkway at Third St./Jingle Pot Rd. intersection, followed by 66 on the Island Hwy. at Hammond Bay Rd.

According to ICBC, 312 motor vehicle collisions were reported among five leading intersections in Nanaimo last year, compared to 280 in 2022, representing an 11 per cent increase.

Bowen Rd. at Northfield Rd. saw the fifth most crashes in Nanaimo, and the highest among non-highway intersections, with 52.

Four Nanaimo intersections are on the Vancouver Island top ten list for crashes at intersections last year, the same number as 2022.

The highest crash intersection in Lantzville in 2023 was the Nanaimo Parkway/Aulds Rd. junction at 53.

In Parksville the Island Hwy./Corfield St. led the way with 17 crashes last year.

ICBC noted 10,985 crashes occurred on Vancouver Island last year, resulting in injuries to 5180 people.

Updated data from the crown corporation on traffic fatalities to occur last year and contributing causes are not yet available.
