DUNCAN — A man with a lengthy criminal history will be behind bars for the next 15 months after he stole a backpack from inside a Duncan school.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said on March 8 around 2:45 p.m., a 26-year-old man was seen inside a school in the 400 block of Beech Ave. in Duncan, carrying a student’s backpack.

He was followed out of the school, where he was confronted by a parent who managed to retrieve the bag while police were called.

Cst. Julie Miller said once officers arrived on scene they were able to quickly get a photo of the suspect.

“From his experience working in the area (the officer) was able to quickly locate him and take him into custody.”

Rylan Mathew McLeod was charged with one count of break and enter and commit indictable offence, and one count of breach of a release order.

He was convicted on May 29 and handed a 15-month jail sentence followed by three of probation.

McLeod has a criminal history on Vancouver Island dating back to 2017 and includes assault, drug charges, break-and-enter, and multiple breaches of release orders.
