Port Pub demolition deferred

Jun 11, 2024 | 7:51 AM

Port Alberni City Council deferred any decision on the future of the Port Pub by another two weeks.

Council was to vote on demolition of the nuisance property given the cost of remediation would be in excess of a million dollars.

Mayor Sharie Minions said the city wants to explore further options before ordering demolition

“The city has to make the decision between investing $1 million in remediating the building and knowing we will not get that money back or demolishing it for about $200,000 then we are absolutely likely to decide to demolish it,” she said. “My feeling is that our obligation before we take that step is to explore every possibility we know. We can’t leave the building as is; we’re not willing to let it be that type of housing anymore, but I do feel we have a strong chance that we can push the province and BC Housing to take that building over to fix it up, bring it up to standard and to give the people who have been living there for many many years their homes back.”
