NANAIMO β€” Additional childcare spaces at District 68 school sites will be available this fall following a funding announcement from Premier David Eby.

Of the 180 new licensed childcare spaces pledged by the premier for the next two years at three school districts, 96 spaces are slated to be added to Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS).

β€œThe schools are still being determined and we will be sharing this information with the school communities as soon as they are confirmed. These spaces are in addition to the current 48 district operated before and after school spaces,” noted an NLPS statement.

NLPS CUPE members will provide the services, with the District stating it has the staffing capacity to run the programs.

NLPS expects 48 new spaces to come online this September, followed by a further 48 in 2025.

In addition to the nearly 50 existing SD68 operated before and after school spaces, there are more than 850 on-site before and after school care spaces provided by private operators, according to NLPS.

The incoming provincially funded childcare spaces could result in fee reductions of as much as $115 per month, as well as potential additional support through the Affordable Child Care Benefit, according to the province.
