NANAIMO — One of the premier events on Vancouver Island returns to the skies this weekend.

The Comox Air Show takes place Saturday, May 18 at 19 Wing Comox, and final preparations are being made ahead of the highly anticipated event.

19 Wing public affairs officer Capt. Christine MacNeil said interest for the event remains high, from community members and people looking to travel to witness the day.

“We’re getting a lot of questions, just people want the details so they can make the most of their day. We’re getting a lot of positive feedback on social media. I know that the organizers are getting emails and phone calls as well.

MacNeil added people have approached military members in public talking about their excitement for the show, and they’ve received phone calls from people in Powell River and Vancouver with interest in attending.

The return of the Air Show comes during a special year, as it’s the 100 year anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The day will feature a mix of aerial acts and static displays, with the flying acts including the RCAF Snowbirds, the CF-18 Demo Team, and a search and rescue parachute demonstration.

The first commercial electric airplane from Sealand Flight from Campbell River and headline the static display aircrafts.

MacNeil said crews on the base are working hard to make sure everything is in order.

“People on the base, they’re setting up fences, they’re laying out things for tents, they were making traffic routes, so everyone’s just full speed ahead.”

Parking opens at 8 a.m, with the day kicking off at 9 a.m.
