WCGH receives cash for staff

West Coast General Hospital has received money to attract and retain health care workers.

The province is putting $73 million into 42 different health care areas through the Rural Recruitment and Retention Grant, that will see all hospital employees receive an extra $8,000 a year, according to West Coast General Site Director Derek Keller.

“In recognizing the challenges that rural and remote communities have in attracting professional healthcare providers and we’re certainly happy that this is coming in and I certainly know the staff that are already on the ground working very hard appreciate it,” he said.

Money will also be put into programs designed to attract doctors and nurses to the rural areas, away from the more popular urban hospitals.

Keller says the funding will help alleviate concerns around staff shortages in the summer.
