PARKSVILLE — A significant amount of money is being raised to protect a large piece of land home to a large ecosystem.

The Nature Trust of BC is looking to raise $350,000 to protect 13 acres of land home to wildlife along the Englishman River at 130 Shelly Road in Parksville.

CEO of the Nature Trust Dr. Jasper Lament said they are committed to protecting this vital piece of land.

“We can’t afford to lose this crucial habitat that is home to five species of Pacific salmon, three species of trout, and provides immeasurable benefits to wildlife, habitat, and the community.”

The Nature Trust of BC is a non-profit organization which has been around for over 50 years protecting some of B.C.’s most critical habitats.

City of Parksville have donated $1.8 million to the funding and will help support a design of a sustainable community pathway.

Nanoose First Nation will also be closely worked with, to protect the stewardship and management of the land.

Community member Chris Bob said everything is connected and it’s important to care for it.

“Snaw-naw-as has a meaningful partnership with The Nature Trust and other stewardship groups with the watershed in mind for future generations. Working together and moving forward is the goal.”

Funding must be raised by June 30, 2024, in order for the land to be a protected conservation area, making it ineligible to be developed or sold.
