Clippers pick up character 5-3 win in Game 3 win over Grizzlies

NANAIMO — The Clippers got their first lead of their series with Victoria then they pushed for their first win.

Nanaimo won 5-3 and trail their best of seven with the Grizzlies 2-1.

Joel Plante had a big game with two goals and an assist and he had the only goal of the first period four minutes into the contest.

Michael Murtagh extended the lead to 2-0 picking up a fortunate bounce on a Clipper power play early in the second.

However the Grizzlies scored twice in two and a half minutes later in the middle frame to tie the game.

Richard Baran put in a shot on the man advantage and Chase Pirtle sniped a short side shot to even the contest.

Nanaimo ramped up in the final period getting an early goal from Plante and the eventual game winner by Noah Alvarez seven minutes into the third.

Nathan King got the Grizzlies within one in the late going but Emmett McHardy clinched the game with an empty netter.

Clippers goalie Chazz Nixon got the win over Victoria’s Oliver Auyeung-Ashton.

The Grizzlies outshot Nanaimo 37-29 while the Clippers went 1/6 on the power play and 2/3 on the penalty kill.

Game 4 goes on Wednesday April 10 at Frank Crane Arena at 7 p.m.
