Police destroy weapons cache

Dozens of firefighters and bystanders gathered near 4th and Burde yesterday afternoon as the Vancouver-based RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit set off a “controlled detonation” inside an apartment building.

Homemade grenades along with chemicals used for rock blasting were discovered, and were set off inside a container as police said they were too unstable to move.

Other explosives were taken to a gravel pit off Ship Creek Road and destroyed, while firefighters doused the fire caused by the initial blast

Also inside the apartment was a large number of prohibited and restricted firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

48 year old Joseph Walczak has been charged with Failing to comply with release order and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, and police say more charges are forthcoming.

Walczak was taken in to custody and will appear in court today.
