First forest fire of the year in Alberni

Mar 20, 2024 | 10:06 AM

PORT ALBERNI – The Coastal Fire Centre received their first forest fire call of the year.
A small fire was spotted Monday morning northeast of Kitsuksis Creek, and just North of Port Alberni, according to fire information officer Julia Caranci.
“We did send an initial attack crew to that fire. They actioned it and it was called out by around 1:30 in the afternoon the same day,” she said. “This was what we call a spot fire – it was very small – about a couple of metres by a couple of meters, even a bit smaller than that, and it’s suspected to be human caused.”
Caranci says people hiking or exploring island forests should be extremely cautious when having a campfire, or doing any activity that causes a spark.
