Nixon injury turns momentum in 6-4 Clippers loss to Surrey

NANAIMO — The Clippers 6-4 loss to the Eagles was in many ways a tale of two games.

Nanaimo was up 4-1 in the second period after playing a very strong first half.

The game changed with an injury to goaltender Chazz Nixon in the Nanaimo crease.

From the time Nixon left the game the Eagles started to chip away, making the score 4-2 through 40 minutes and scoring the only four goals of the final frame.

Nixon went down after Surrey forward Massimo Fazio made contact with his arm and shoulder and it brought a hush over the crowd and the Clippers bench went Nixon went to the dressing room with six minutes left in the second.

Previous to the Nixon injury Nanaimo had goals from Connor DeTurris and Joel Plante in the first period and Cole Lonsdale and Luke Buss on a power play in the second stanza.

The Eagles were led by Zachary Wagnon with a goal and two assists, Ryan Evenhuis with two goals and Aaron Schwartz and Micah Berger who had a goal and an assist each.

Nanaimo outshot Surrey 37-31 with both teams going 1-1 on the man advantage.

The loss drops the Clippers to 0-4 against Surrey with one head to head game remaining.

Nanaimo has road games upcoming against Chilliwack on March 15 and Vernon March 16.
