Echo Aquatic Centre in Port Alberni in jeopardy
The rift between the City and Rural Areas could kill the pool replacement project.
As rural directors from Beaufort and Beaver Creek hint at possibly opting out of a new aquatic centre, Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions remains adamant that paying for the project is all for one or none for all.
“Our taxpayers can’t afford to continue to provide services that the regional district has chosen not to, and I know that we have a long history of those services where they should be regional services and they’re not, and the city continues to provide them because they’re important services,” she said. “We can’t keep doing that as costs continue to escalate. It’s very clear that opting out from one area could very well lead to the whole project being canceled.”
After two hours of debate at yesterday’s regional district meeting, the board agreed to move forward with the project, although a site design, cost, location and approval referendums, still have to be determined.
