NANAIMO — The Clippers final roster addition of the 2023-24 season was forward Remi Gelinas.

The 18-year-old was acquired in a future considerations deal with the Powell River Kings on Friday, Feb. 9, but the newest Clipper had been on the team’s radar for some time,

“I spoke to the Clippers before going to Powell River,” Gelinas said. “At the time it was a question of the role I would have and there was more room in Powell River. When I found out the Clippers had room and wanted to trade for me I was excited to come here.”

Gelinas prides him self on being a very responsible player.

“I think I’m a very good two way player. I try when I get on the ice not to get scored on and get a goal if possible. I’ve had to adapt to the speed of the game since coming to the BCHL. I’m trying to be a little bit quicker and react before I get the puck rather after I get it.”

On Saturday, Feb. 10, Gelinas made his Clippers debut in a 4-0 win in Victoria.

“It was exciting. The boys were really into it and it was a really good game.”

Clippers head coach and general manager Colin Birkas had dialogue with Gelinas even before this current BCHL season.

“We had the intention of bringing him in next year and thought he’d finish this season in Hawkesbury (CCHL). When he became available from Powell River we needed some depth right now. Bringing in a kid of his quality who’s going to be here for the next year or so we jumped all over it.”

Clippers highlights from games on Feb. 9 and 10 against the Eagles and Grizzlies.

Gelinas hasn’t settled in on a set line yet but that will likely happen soon with Nanaimo hosting Langley on Friday, Feb. 16 and going back to Victoria again on Saturday, Feb. 17.

CLIP NOTES:

Goalie Chazz Nixon was named the BCHL’s second star of the week allowing just one goal against in two games while stopping 64 of 65 shots. He also recorded his first career shutout Feb. 10 versus the Grizzlies.

For the first half of the BCHL season the Clippers were among the highest scoring teams in the league, but in 2024 they’ve been carving out a new identity. Since Jan. 5 Nanaimo has allowed one goal against or less in five of their nine hockey games.
