City / Rural rift grows

The distance between the City of Port Alberni and Beaver Creek is growing.
The rift became obvious at a recent regional district meeting when some rural areas were forced to fund city services they asked to opt out of.
Beaver Creek director Susan Roth said while the city is quietly talking about amalgamation, her area is looking at the possibility of incorporation.
“We got to start looking at a different governance model because we want to be on our own; we’re different,” she said. “There’s no way we want to become a revenue stream for the city. We have completely different spending outlooks and we also have different wants and needs. We’re a farming community, a residential community, much different than the City of Port Alberni and we want to stay that way.”
Roth says her fear is that Beaver Creek will get forced to fund a new aquatic centre at levels that are unaffordable to her constituents.
She expects the arguments to heat up through the next few months of budget debates.
