NANAIMO — A 22-year-old man remains in hospital with serious, but not life threatening injuries after being stabbed downtown.

RCMP report the victim was involved in an altercation near the Gordon St. and Cameron Rd. intersection, near the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the man alerted employees of the nearby Casino Nanaimo via a back door to the building.

“He had several stab wounds, he couldn’t provide much information. Two employees at the Casino provided first aid, our members then responded. The individual was transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.”

Investigators haven’t been able to speak much with the victim, however conversations with him will help inform next steps.

Police did recover a “grainy” video of the incident, according to O’Brien, however it did not reveal much..

“There’s a group of people in the area but we don’t have any suspects identified at this point. We don’t understand any motive.”

Further canvassing will take place in the days to come to see if any security camera footage from nearby businesses can identify those involved.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345.
