NANAIMO — Clippers defenceman Matt Lahey is being recognized by the hockey world on a couple of fronts.

Earlier this month he was ranked 144th for the upcoming NHL draft by NHL Central Scouting, then on Friday, Jan. 19, he will participate in the BCHL Top Prospects Game with many of the best young players in the league.

The 2006-born blueliner is taking a humble approach to being considered one of the top defensive prospects in hockey.

“I knew I was going to be on the list coming in. I’m super grateful but at the same time, I’m trying not think about it and just continue the way I’m playing. I’m always trying to work on my game and get better as the season goes on.”

Lahey is one of five Nanaimo Clippers going to the prospects game.

He’ll be joined by Andrew Brown, Tyler Hodges, Joel Plante and Mike Murtagh.

With Brett Merner and Willyam Gendron participating in the BCHL All-Star Game one day later, there will be seven Clippers spending the weekend in Penticton.

For Lahey, having the opportunity to enjoy the experience with so many teammates is special.

“It means a lot to me that there’s seven of us going. I’m really excited to be there with my teammates and the top talent in the league. I’m just going to take it minute by minute and soak in the experience there.”

In his rookie season last year, Lahey appeared in 34 games and had one assist.

This year, Lahey has 13 points in 32 games and is playing on a top defensive pair with team captain Brett Merner.

The 17-year-old said the veterans on the 2022/23 Clipper team were key for his development.

“I took last year as a learning experience and I learned a lot. The game has slowed down for me a bit. I put in a lot of work in the summer and I think that helps too. I’m always looking to hit another gear. I’m going to try to skate with the puck a little bit more this year.”

Lahey and the Clippers are coming off a 4-1 win over Victoria and enter the league all-star break in a tie for second place in the Coastal Division standings.

Nanaimo next plays a road series in Powell River on Jan. 26 and 27.
