Dec 27, 2023 | 5:22 AM

NANAIMO — A family-friendly, activity based event sums up the City of Nanaimo’s New Year’s Day event at Beban Park.

Held on Monday, Jan. 1 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Nanaimo’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is launching into the new year with Activate 2024.

Events include swimming, skating, entertainment, arts and crafts, games and inflatables.

Tickets are available on the day of the event or advance at the Beban Park Pool office. Tickets are $12 or a five pack for $48.

“People can make a lovely day of it, I think it’s a great way to start off the new year with a bit of a celebration,” Mayor Leonard Krog said.

Two swimming sessions are available: 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., while family skating takes place at Frank Crane Arena and Stick ‘n’ Puck at Cliff McNabb Arena.

The father-son duo of Big Mess will provide an energetic and interactive musical performance.

Additional information on Activate 2024 can be found here.

Referencing nearly 30 complimentary Winter Wonderland public skating sessions ongoing through Dec. 30 at Frank Crane Arena and extra public swimming opportunities, Krog credited private donors and their staff for making it all happen.

“…putting on events that are really good for the whole community, that bring the community out, I give full compliments to parks and rec for this.”
