NANAIMO — Using a firearm during a robbery to confine a victim in a home north of Qualicum Beach resulted in a four-and-a-half-year jail sentence for one man.

Spencer Lee Schaeffer, 38, recently pleaded guilty to a trio of charges in BC Supreme Court in Nanaimo, where he was then sentenced by justice Robin Baird.

Since Schaeffer was credited with 30 months of pre-trial custody, the Nov. 14 judgment stipulated he’d serve a further 23 months and seven days behind bars.

Justice Baird recommended Schaeffer serve the sentence in the offender’s hometown at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre provincial institution at Brannen Lake.

The maximum allowable three-year probationary term with various conditions will apply to Schaeffer when he gets out.

A lifetime firearms ban and mandatory DNA sample order were also applied to Schaeffer.

He pleaded guilty to a confinement charge, weapons offence and theft over $5,000.

Co-accused Teresa Marie Evenson remains on the loose as of Thursday, Nov. 30, with Oceanside RCMP believing she’s in the Lower Mainland area.

On March 10, 2022, Oceanside RCMP reported someone was threatened with a firearm, while numerous items from the home were stolen, along with the victim’s vehicle.

Schaeffer and Evenson were arrested several hours after the incident in Nanaimo, police said, who also noted the parties were all known to each other.

Schaeffer has an extensive criminal history directly tied to longstanding addiction issues.

He’s been in and out of jail for the past 20 years for numerous offences, including assault, drug trafficking, weapons offences and driving infractions.

Multiple arrest warrants for Evenson were issued after Oceanside police say she was last seen at a Surrey recovery house on April 13, 2023.

She is described as white, standing 5’6”, with brown hair and green eyes. She has several star tattoos on the right side of her face.
