NANAIMO — Another large multi-family residential development is in the works for south Nanaimo.

Support was given during a Thursday, Oct. 26, Design Advisory Panel (DAP) meeting for a development permit application at 821 Haliburton St., an area home to multiple similar developments in recent years.

The lot is located south of Woodhouse St. on the east side of the Island Hwy., south of the Days Inn motel, and across Haliburton St. from the Coastland pulp mill.

The proposal is for the vacant lot to be developed into a 5-storey, residential building with 104 one and two-bedroom units.

The size of each unit ranges from 50 to 94 metres squared and will include on-site surface visitor parking, and two levels of under-building parking, with around 170 total parking spots.

Parking will also be available for car-share services and scooters/motorcycles, as well as long-term bike storage in the underground parking lot.

A garden path, secondary walkway from Haliburton St., and a rooftop amenity space are also planned, with a proposed variance of an additional 1.1m in building height to accommodate the rooftop deck also receiving support from the panel.

821 Haliburton St., the site of the development permit application, is currently a vacant lot located in south Nanaimo south of the Days Inn and across from Coastland Wood Industries. (Jordan Davidson/NanaimoNewsNOW)

If fully approved, this new development would add to a number of recently completed or in-progress multi-unit residential buildings along Haliburton St.

The application still needs to go through a comprehensive review process, which includes required development and building permits before construction can start.
