NANAIMO — Summer baseball season is over for the Mid Island Pirates and Nanaimo NightOwls but there’s still plenty happening for local players.

The Pirates Carter Cathers went to Toronto to take part in the Toronto Blue Jays Canadian Futures Showcase Sept. 19-23.

Cathers was one of 80 players selected to the camp and his strong play earned him a spot on the 35 man roster for the final prospects game on Sept. 23.

“It’s been a dream of mine to represent Canada and I am very excited that I get to fulfill that dream.”

After the his showcase performance Cathers was selected to join the Canadian Junior National Team program for a trip to the Dominican Republic.

The national team will be playing games in the Dominican Republic from Oct. 11 until Oct. 23.

A former Pirate, Aaron Marsh, made news with the Nanaimo NightOwls earlier in September as well.

Marsh has been a member of the NightOwls in both of their first two WCL seasons and became the first player signed for 2024.

NightOwls co-owner Jim Swanson said the team is thrilled to have Marsh back.

“Aaron is a leader and you can tell he loves to play the game. He loves to play in front of our great crowds in Nanaimo.”

Marsh batted .287 with 39 hits and 24 RBI in his most recent campaign.

Catcher Mikey Easter is also committed to rejoin the NightOwls and the team will confirm in early October the return of their entire coaching staff for next year.

NightOwls season tickets are already on sale for their upcoming third season at Serauxmen Stadium.
