Historic ocean swim returns to Qualicum Beach

QUALICUM BEACH — For over 60 years, a flagship event has tested area swimmers.

The Qualicum Beach Ocean Mile Swim returns Sunday, Aug. 20 with a one-mile dip along the town waterfront. It starts from the boat ramp along Hwy. 19A with swimmers heading south for a half mile before returning.

Swimmers of all ages turn out for the event, with 54 competitors last year.

“There’s definitely regulars who come year after year, they like to train for it and it’s sort of a family event for some people that have done it. The event has been passed down through generations,” Heather Svensen, Town deputy CAO, told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Last year, Glen Christiensen took out first overall in a time of 26 minutes, nine seconds.

Gusty winds and choppy seas are expected to challenge swimmers this year.

The 2022 edition of the race also saw the debut of an award named after Elizabeth Hieronymi, an instrumental figure in recreation for the Oceanside region for over 20 years.

Last year, the award went to the fastest senior woman, Betty Perkins, who completed the course in 55:43.

Registration for this year starts at 8 a.m. with the swim at 10 a.m. near Shores Restaurant at 2831 Island Hwy. East.

Support on the water is provided by RCMP, Coast Guard, Streamkeepers, Dragonfly Stand Up Paddleboard, as well as event support from the Regional District of Nanaimo.
