East Wellington Rd. closes due to construction on major infrastructure project

NANAIMO — A well-used connector for residents of rural parts of the City is set for significant changes over the coming months.

Crews on the Midtown Water Supply Project began the next phase along East Wellington Rd. on Monday, July 31, closing traffic in both directions between Westwood Rd. to just the east of the overpass.

A full closure where no through traffic will be allowed is expected to run from Monday, July 31 to Friday, Aug. 4. Work in the area is expected to carry through until early October.

The $56 million Midtown Water Supply Project is an extensive upgrade of water delivery systems throughout Nanaimo, creating redundancy on existing systems and adding capacity for future growth.

Various closures will take place along East Wellington Rd. over the coming months in various smaller sections.

Crews are scheduled to focus on eastern portions of East Wellington Rd. first, in a bid to complete required work before school returns in September.

Other sections to the west will be subject to construction work between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. throughout August, September and October.

Businesses on East Wellington Rd. will remain open and accessible during the work, with traffic controllers on site guiding cars through to already impacted businesses Monday morning.

More information on the Midtown Water Supply Project is available on the City of Nanaimo website.
