RCMP Highway Patrol officer injured by speeding motorcyclist

PARKSVILLE — Local Mounties are looking for a motorcycle rider who they say hit an officer with their bike during an attempted traffic stop.

While on routine duty on Hwy. 1 south of Chemainus on Friday, July 7 around 5 p.m., a motorcycle heading north was spotted speeding through traffic and illegally passing several vehicles.

Cpl. Mike Moore with BC Highway Patrol said the bike sped past officers in a pair of marked RCMP vehicles, who radioed ahead.

“Approximately 20 minutes later, the motorcycle was spotted…in a posted construction zone near Mount Sicker Rd. where traffic funnels into one lane of travel. The motorcycle was again passing vehicles illegally. Traffic was halted and a uniformed officer raised his hand in an attempt to get the motorcycle to stop.”

Police say the motorcyclist didn’t stop, but in fact accelerated, hitting the officer then sped off.

The officer was left with non-life-threatening injuries, while a police motorcycle was also damaged in the collision.

Mounties were unable to provide a concrete description of the bike or rider and are looking for people who may have seen either along Hwy. 1 Friday afternoon.

Moore added to NanaimoNewsNOW police initially opted not to pursue the motorist, out of concern for public safety.

” The decision to initiate a pursuit is always a case by case decision based on a number of factors, including public safety. There are provincial policing standards in place in BC and police officers in BC are very mindful that the intention is to stop the illegal driving behaviour and not to escalate it.”

Any information which could advance the police investigation should be sent to BC Highway Patrol in Parksville by phoning 250-954 -2950.

Police are hoping to learn more about a motorcyclist which was seen twice speeding through traffic, including through a construction zone, on Friday, July 7. (Google Earth)
