Seasonal direct flights linking Nanaimo Airport and Toronto takes off

NANAIMO — Weekly flights between Nanaimo and the country’s largest city returned on Friday, June 23 for the summer.

Seasonal direct return service on Friday mornings between Nanaimo Airport and Pearson International Airport in Toronto aboard an Air Canada Rouge Airbus 319 plane is scheduled to continue until the end of September.

The route aboard the 120-seat plane takes about 4-and-a-half hours, according to a Nanaimo Airport news release.

Summer service via Air Canada Rouge between Nanaimo and Toronto was first introduced in 2018, which expanded to three weekly flights last year.

An originally scheduled four weekly flights linking Nanaimo and Toronto in the summer of 2020 were curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 3,400-kilometre link represents by far the longest route offered at Nanaimo Airport, which primarily serves as a regional carrier with non-stop service to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, with WestJet providing a majority of the service.

Starting on Sept. 12 Pacific Coastal Airlines launches daily non-stop flights between Nanaimo Airport and Vancouver South Terminal as well as between Nanaimo Airport and Kelowna aboard a 19-passenger plane.
