NANAIMO — Direct flights between Vancouver Island and eastern Canada are set to resume for the summer season.

Air Canada service from Nanaimo Airport to Toronto Pearson will begin June 29 and running three days a week during the summer on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Dave Devana, president and CEO of the Airport Commission, said in a release the route will play a sizeable role in tourism and economic development for the region.

“Air Canada sees the value in continuing to invest in this route, which has been on our schedule for several years now. The Island is a popular destination and its growing population will create an increasing demand for air travel.”

The flight will take approximately four and a half hours, with Air Canada listing a mid-July flight for $472 as of Monday, May 23.

Service to Vancouver and Calgary has long been a staple of the airport, through both Air Canada and WestJet with added service to Toronto put on the schedule in busier travel times.

The addition of Toronto service also opens up more streamlined travel options for the eastern United States and Europe for Nanaimo and Island travellers.

“A morning flight from Nanaimo can get travellers to many global destinations later that same day,” Devana added.

The route will be serviced by an Airbus a319 with approximately 120 seats.

Air Canada already offers flights to and from Toronto out of both Victoria and Comox airports.
