Island Health expands mental health and substance use counselling services

Jun 13, 2023 | 5:33 AM

NANAIMO — Island Health is widening its mental health service capacity for those living with moderate mental health and substance use challenges.

Publically funded, community-based health authority counselling services will partner up with 11 private sector services across the province, meeting the needs of at least 1,500 additional people.

Island Health’s executive director of mental health substance use Sheila Leadbetter said they already provide these services, but know there are people suffering from these issues who still do not have access to proper services.

“This is a way that we can offer citizens of Vancouver Island a service that they haven’t had before. We also know that when people are going without counselling, even when they’re considered more mild to moderate, that things for them can escalate.”

Nanaimo service providers on the list include EHN Outpatient Services (Edgewood Treatment Centre) and the Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Society.

A full list of service providers is available here.

Leadbetter said patients can self-refer or go through their primary care provider in order to access their services.

“There’s people that are suffering from anxiety, PTSD, there’s other people that are managing substance challenges and they want help with trying to manage their triggers. Those are generally people that are more mild, but it really truly depends on the individual and how it is impacting their life.”

These new counselling services are being provided following a request for proposals initiated by Island Health last year, and involve a mix of non-profit service providers, for-profit organizations, and in-person and virtual care.

“…our offices are open Monday to Friday generally eight until four, and if anybody outside of those hours feel that they’re in crisis, I highly recommend they call the Crisis Line.”
