NANAIMO — If you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be a member of the RCMP, now is your chance.

The Nanaimo RCMP will be hosting an open house on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at their detachment on the corner of Prideaux St and Fitzwilliam St.

City community policing coordinator Jon Stuart said the event is also to celebrate national police week which starts on May 14, and the 150th anniversary of the RCMP on the 23.

“We’re going to have an opportunity for you to see a whole different variety of RCMP units and the things they do. We’ll have the tactical armoured vehicle here, and we’ll have the emergency response team members here to show you stuff that they have.

Underwater recovery teams and the explosives unit will also be attending.

Activities for the kids like face painting and sidewalk chalk will also be available, along with representatives from Crime Stoppers and a barbeque hosted by members of the Tour de Rock.

Activities for all ages will be on hand at the Nanaimo RCMP’s open house Saturday. (NanaimoRCMP)

Stuart said it’ll be a chance for the public to get a first-hand look at what it means to be a member of the RCMP.

“It’s going to be a fun event for the whole family to come and see the things that we do with the RCMP. There will be tours of the cell blocks if you ever wanted to see what the inside of a jail cell looks like.”

The entire building won’t be open to the public, as they are still on shift and certain information needs to be kept confidential.

Stuart told NanaimoNewsNOW this is also an opportunity for anyone interested in starting a career with Canada’s national policing force.

“We’re going to have representatives from our recruiting section in Vancouver, E Division headquarters are coming over. Our recruiting people are going to be there on-site to answer questions and provide information about a career in the RCMP as well.”

There will be no parking available in the immediate vicinity in front of the detachment, including the horseshoe or along Milton St.
