Clippers drop Game 1 to the Chiefs 2-1

Apr 14, 2023 | 10:05 PM

NANAIMO — The Clippers had shots, power plays and Grade A scoring chances but couldn’t get enough offense to beat the Chilliwack Chiefs.

The Chiefs won 2-1 in a tight contest at Frank Crane Arena to take a 1-0 lead in the second round best of seven series.

After a scoreless first period Jeremie Payant scored a shorthanded goal to put Nanaimo up a goal five minutes into the middle frame.

A turnover late in the period led to a goal by Lucas Sorace which put the Chiefs back on even terms.

The Clippers were the better team through 40 minutes but netminder Lucas Szyszka made a handful of spectacular saves to keep Chilliwack in the game.

In the third period the Chiefs had the Clippers hemmed up in their own zone for stretches and eventually notched the game winner on a quick shot from the slot by Dylan Kinch that alluded goalie Aidan Campbell.

Nanaimo outshot Chilliwack 35-21 and had four power plays to the Chiefs one but couldn’t solve Szyszka more than once.

The Clippers will look to rebound in Game 2 at Frank Crane Arena on April 15 at 7 p.m.
