NANAIMO — A dominant fourth quarter has sealed a national championship for the VIU Mariners.

The Mariners women’s basketball team were crowned the CCAA’s best on Saturday, March 18 by winning the gold medal at their tournament in Hamilton, Ontario, over Quebec’s Geants de Saint-Jean by a 60-54 scoreline.

VIU got out to a 15-8 first quarter lead but trailed narrowly at the half and three quarter time,. It was a strong finish to close things out as they outscored Saint-Jean 14-6 in the final quarter to win.

Harriette Mackenzie led the way for the Mariners by top scoring with 17 points and contributing 19 rebounds. Ranika Guyton chipped in with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.

Mackenzie was named tournament MVP after three double-doubles in three games.

The win was redemption for a team which fell one win short a year ago as VIU, who hosted the tournament, had to settle for silver in 2022 after dropping their final game in overtime.

It also cemented a perfect run through the post-season for the Mariners.

After a 15-2 season through the PACWEST regular season, the Mariners won the provincial championships to qualify at the B.C. representative at nationals.

It was their sixth provincial championship.

The VIU Mariners men’s team have a chance at bronze on Sunday, March 19 at their national championship.

They’ll take on St. Clair Saints at noon.
