PARKSVILLE — One person remains in hospital with significant injuries after a motorist hit two pedestrians on the Island Hwy in Parksville

Oceanside RCMP, local firefighters and paramedics were called to Hwy. 19A at Moilliet St. on Monday, March 6 at about 3:20 p.m. after a man and woman, both in their early 40’s, were hit.

Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth said the woman was taken to hospital with critical injuries, while the man sustained minor injuries after the pair were hit by a Toyota Corolla.

“The driver of the vehicle remained at scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Driver impairment has been excluded as a contributing factor to the collision,” Worth said.

Northbound traffic was affected as a result of the incident for several hours as police continued their investigation. (submitted photo)

Several witnesses saw what happened and rushed to the scene to help.

The light-controlled intersection includes a crosswalk.

Investigators kept northbound traffic on Hwy. 19A closed for several hours as they combed the scene.

Officers from both Oceanside RCMP and the RCMP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service remained on scene into Monday evening.

Police continue to investigate and are hoping to speak with more people in the area.

“If anybody has not spoken to investigators, or they happen to have dash cam which captures the crash or the moments leading up to the crash, please contact our office and our investigators would like to have a chat with you about that,” Worth said.

Those with information can contact the Oceanside detachment at 250-248-6111, quoting file number 2023-2175.
