NANAIMO — The Clippers have needed to play beyond 60 minutes several times lately including their most recent 4-3 victory over the Capitals.

Nanaimo has been to overtime in four of their last seven games winning three of those contests.

On Friday March 3 the Clippers surrendered the first goal to the Capitals Ethan Dekay before Jake Hewitt on the man advantage and Jeremie Payant gave Nanaimo the lead.

Quinn Disher put Cowichan on even terms before the first intermission.

The teams traded power play markers in the middle frame with Charles Tardif giving Nanaimo the lead and Ethan O’Halloran knotting the game at 3-3.

Nanaimo’ goalie Shane Shelest and his counterpart Lukas Renaud were perfect in the final period to set up overtime.

The Clippers earned an OT power play on a tripping call and Kai Daniells notched his team leading 31st goal to at 1:26 of the extra session.

For Daniells it was his third overtime tally and his eighth game winning goal of the season.

The final shots were 36-28 for the Clippers with Nanaimo going 3/5 on the power play and 1/3 killing penalties.

The win was Nanaimo’s 34th of the season surpassing their total of 33 from the 21-22 campaign.

It was also a special victory for coach Colin Birkas who recorded his 50th win with team regular season and playoffs.

Nanaimo is off until a three game weekend March 10-12 beginning with a home date against the Powell River Kings on March 10.
