Clippers grind out 3-2 overtime win in Victoria

NANAIMO — The Clippers earned their first win of 2023 with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Grizzlies.

After a scoreless first period Nanaimo’s Willyam Gendron banked a shot of a Victoria defender to give the Clippers a 1-0 lead.

Victoria’s Anthony Carone evened the score in the third period.

Then Gendron vaulted the Clippers back in front with a power play goal on a quick shot from the slot.

The Grizzlies tied the score late on a late rebound tally by Jacksenn Hungle.

Late in overtime Kai Daniells notched the winner on a delayed penalty call to give Nanaimo their 25th victory of the season.

Aidan Campbell was stellar in net with a 47 save performance.

He was also the game’s second star.

The final shots were 50-34 for Victoria and each team had three power play opportunities.

Nanaimo now has a 3-1 record against the Grizzlies this year and the win helped extend the Clippers lead to six points over the Surrey Eagles for top spot in the Coastal Division.

The Clippers next game is at home against the Eagles on Friday Jan. 13.
