‘Conditions are nasty out here:’ Nanaimo road conditions varying wildly amid continuing snow

Dec 20, 2022 | 3:37 PM

NANAIMO — Road conditions continue to be dangerous across much of the region.

Multiple vehicles have ended up in ditches, sliding through intersections, and colliding with medians or other vehicles throughout much of Tuesday, Dec. 20 as snow has continued to fall.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Capt. Brian Cripps said roads are messy and are believed to be a contributing factor behind a rollover incident on the Old Island Hwy., near Oliver Rd. around 3 p.m.

“Conditions are nasty out here, people need to slow down. This accident is the result of probably not having the proper tires and probably driving too fast.”

A northbound vehicle left the roadway just past the Oliver Rd. intersection rolled and ended up in the ditch.

Traffic was restricted to one northbound vehicle while crews dealt with the situation.

“The driver is being checked over, he appears to be ok and we’re just waiting for towing to get it out of the ditch,” Cripps added.

He said there has been a steady stream of calls all day, with more across the region. While main corridors through the city seem to be ok, Cripps said the highways were still tricky.

“I think the City crews have kept up with it quite well, streets are fairly clear actually, it’s just the highways here that’s a little greasy. ”

He added drivers should only be out if they are properly equipped with the appropriate tires, and only make trips which are absolutely essential.
