Clippers persevere through topsy turvy third period to win 6-4 in Powell River

Nov 25, 2022 | 10:24 PM

NANAIMO — The Clippers rebounded from a rare loss to the Surrey Eagles by beating the Powell River Kings 6-4.

Each team had the lead twice in the game but Nanaimo received some timely scoring to get the win.

The game was even at 1-1 through 20 minutes with Casey Aman scoring for the Kings and Ethan Mistry replying for the Clippers.

Sam Schoenfeld put Powell River in front five minutes into the second period but Nanaimo pushed back with markers by Willyam Gendron and Nick Sajevic to take a lead to the second intermission.

Special teams and extra men were responsible for all five goals in a back and forth third.

Jack Blanchett knotted the game on a Kings man advantage while Rylan Yates and Jake Hewitt cashed in on Nanaimo power plays to lift the score to 5-3.

With Powell River goaltender Kyle Metson on the bench the Kings got within a goal on a botched clearance by goalie Aidan Campbell before Mike Murtagh scored an as yet uncredited empty net goal at 19:59.

Campbell was extremely busy in net making 43 saves and he was picked the first star.

The final shots were 47-32 for Powell River while the Clippers went 2/3 on the man advantage and 2/3 on the penalty kill.

Sajevic left the game due to injury in the third period and didn’t return but the Clippers don’t have an update on his condition.

Nanaimo has improved to 3-1 against the Kings and 17-4 on the season.

The Clippers next outing is their fifth straight road game when they play in Cowichan Valley on Sunday Nov. 27.
