Nanaimo Curling Club busy with fall leagues and bonspiels

NANAIMO – The fall curling schedule is well underway at the Nanaimo Curling Club.

There are events happening at the club the final three weekends in November.

On the 11^th and 12th its the Double Doubles Spiel, the Men’s Hangover Bonspiel is happening on Nov. 18 and 19 and the month concludes with the Master’s Open on Nov. 25-26..

New club manager Matthew Boll said there is also a steady dose of league play every week.

“We have 17 different leagues and close to 180 teams in total. We have leagues from Sunday morning through to Friday evening. That’s not including our junior leagues.”

Back in September one of the Nanaimo club members, Teri Palynchuk, was honoured by being one of four newcomers to the Curling Canada board of Governors.

“She’s a past president of our club,” Boll said. “Previously she sat on our board for many years. She runs one of our senior mixed leagues and I haven’t met anyone here who doesn’t know her.”

Later on in the season Nanaimo will host a national event.

The Canadian Stick Curling Championships are happening Mar. 30 to Apr. 2.

Boll said the championship is coming to town a bit earlier than expected.

“We had bid for it for the 2024-2025 season but they liked our bid enough they asked if we could host it this year.”

Boll hopes the event will introduce curling on a mobility level to the community.

“It’s a different take on curling, it’s a doubles event open to any number of teams from across the country. We’ve had some previous winners at the event last year in Moncton.”

Nanaimo does have it’s own stick curling league but many people aren’t aware of it.

There are 16 teams in the local league which runs on Monday mornings.

Boll took over as club manager in July and is still getting to know all of Nanaimo’s players and teams.

He does expect Nanaimo will have individuals and teams who qualify for provincial, national and international events this season.

“We have some strong curlers. We have some curlers who have won provincial events before we have a number of men’s and women’s teams. Whether it’s masters, doubles we have members who participate in those major events every year.”
