‘It’s time:’ Midland Tools to shut down after over 40 years as Nanaimo institution

NANAIMO — A staple of the community is undergoing a major transition.

Tony Wright, owner of Midland Tools on Terminal Ave. at Townsite Rd. is stepping away from the business by the end of the year.

Wright said after staying in the same location for over 40 years, it’s time for him to switch gears.

“It’s time. We’re getting on a bit, it’s time to change things up a little bit. I’ll back away, I want to retire for a while.”

Currently selling off what inventory they can in a liquidation-style environment, the tool store will make way for Midland to expand their tarp store on the same site, which is slated to open early next year.

Some time in December, Midland Tools will officially close to allow time for renovations.

Wright has few regrets about being in the tool business for this long.

“Its been fantastic, been great. That’s what I’ll miss the most is the people. The biggest thing I will miss is our customers. I appreciate the support over the years.”

He plans on staying in Nanaimo to enjoy his retirement, while his staff will remain on and continue working at the location throughout the transition and beyond.

The current site of the Tarp Zone will be converted into a storage warehouse.

Midland opened in 1982, originally as a liquidation store.

What started as a 40th-anniversary sale quickly turned into a retirement sale when the owner decided it was time to hang up his tool belt. (Jordan Davidson/NanaimoNewsNOW)
