Seasonal fire bans lifted following days of rain for Vancouver Island

Oct 26, 2022 | 1:50 PM

NANAIMO — After a few days of some much-needed precipitation, open burning activities will once again be allowed in the Coastal Fire Centre.

Starting at noon on Friday, Oct. 28, category 2 and 3 fires will once again be allowed across Vancouver Island and parts of B.C.’s coast.

This includes open fires for various burning materials like stubble or grass, as long as they don’t exceed certain height requirements.

Also allowed will be fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels, and air curtain burners.

Local burning and fireworks restrictions in municipalities remain in place and trump any move from the Coastal Fire Centre.

Fireworks are prohibited in the City of Nanaimo, Parksville, and Town of Qualicum Beach, along with certain electoral areas of the Regional District of Nanaimo.

The prohibition on campfires was lifted on Sept. 20.

Campfires are defined as measuring at most a half-metre by a half-metre or cooking stoves which use gas, propane, or briquettes.

Despite the extended summer which caused drought-like conditions across the island this summer and fall, local fire departments said residents were cautious with their fire activity this year.

More information about the Coastal Fire Centre and the state of all current fire bans can be found on their Twitter or Facebook accounts.
