Oct 19, 2022 | 4:38 PM

NANAIMO — Election officials across the region have dotted I’s and crossed T’s from votes cast in the 2022 Municipal Election.

City of Nanaimo chief election officer Sheila Gurrie confirmed vote counts from the Saturday, Oct. 15 election, which saw Mayor Leonard Krog elected for a second term ahead of his main challenger Tasha Brown.

Five incumbents were also returned: Sheryl Armstrong, Tyler Brown, Ben Geselbracht, Erin Hemmens and Ian Thorpe. Three new people will join them: Hilary Eastmure, Paul Manly and Janice Perrino.

Confirming vote counts was especially important during this election cycle, with Eastmure beating out incumbent councillor Don Bonner by just 126 votes on election night.

The final meeting of Nanaimo’s council from the 2018-2022 term will take place Monday, Oct. 24 with the new Council being sworn in on Monday, Nov. 7.

For the Regional District of Nanaimo, the candidates who received the highest number of valid votes for the Officer of Director positions were Jessica Stanley (Area A), Lauren Melanson (Area C), Leanne Salter (Area F), and Lehann Wallace (Area G).

Vanessa Craig (Area B), Bob Rogers (Area E), and Stuart McLean (Area H) were all elected by acclamation.

City of Parksville results also remained unchanged from Saturday night with incumbent councillor Doug O’Brien beating incumbent Mayor Ed Mayne by 1,470 votes.

Mayor-elect O’Brien will be joined at the seven-member Council table by Amit Gaur, Mary Beil, Sean Wood, Adam Fras, Sylvia Martin and Joel Grenz.

The new Council will also be sworn in Nov. 7 during their inaugural meeting at the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre.

No adjustment was needed in the Town of Qualicum Beach as former Mayor Teunis Westbroek will return to City Hall after defeating incumbent Brian Wiese by 1,254 votes.

Westbroek will govern with Scott Harrison, Anne Skipsey, Petronella Vander Valk and Jean Young.
