Oct 9, 2022 | 5:12 PM

NANAIMO — Jeremie Payant had the first goal of the game and the shootout winner in the Clippers 4-3 victory over the Rivermen.

Payant’s first tally stood up through 20 minutes until Langley got a pair of second period markers from Vitaly Levvy on a power play and Keeton Oakley in a scramble.

A Charles Tardif deflection goal late in the second evened the score before the second intermission.

An early third period power play effort for Kai Daniells put the Clippers on top again until a late goal by Rivermen captain Joseph Messina with the goalie pulled forced overtime.

Nanaimo was unable to score on a power play in the extra session setting the stage for a shootout.

Shane Shelest stopped all three shots for the Clippers while Payant roofed a backhander to notch the only shootout tally.

Nanaimo outshot Langley 38-36 while going 2/3 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill.

The Oct. 9 three stars were:

1) Kai Daniells 2) Luke Munroe 3) Ethan Mistry

The Clippers next action is a home date on Oct. 14 against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
