NANAIMO — A multi-vehicle collision on the Island Hwy. involving at least three vehicles has sent three people to hospital.

It happened on Thursday, Oct. 6, roughly 100 metres north of the Northfield Rd. intersection at about 3:10 p.m., substantially damaging all three vehicles involved.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Capt. Shane Manson said on scene the severity of the injuries to the three people are not known.

One of the injured people had to be extracted by NFR.

The most heavily damaged vehicle was a Pontiac Montana van which came to rest in the northbound lane. A silver car had some front end damage, while a red SUV had a flat tire and rear-end damage.

Both the silver and red vehicles were in the southbound lanes after the incident.

Two more vehicles were in the vicinity, however left a short time later after speaking with police.

It’s unclear which direction each vehicle was travelling in at the time of the incident, or how it occurred.

NanaimoNewsNOW has reached out to Nanaimo RCMP for comment.

Detours were in place for northbound traffic at Northfield Rd, while southbound motorists were diverted onto Dorman Rd. or Highland Blvd.

Two of the three vehicles involved, with the silver car sustaining front end damage and the red SUV impacted from the rear. (Alex Rawnsley/NanaimoNewsNOW)
