Clippers open season with 4-2 win in Powell River

Sep 23, 2022 | 10:22 PM

NANAIMO — The Clippers have now won two straight season openers in Powell River.

In 2021 it was 6-2 and in 2022 a 4-2 triumph.

In the first half of this year’s contest Nanaimo put a b lanket on the Kings.

Powell River only had three shots in the first period and were held to under ten until late in the second frame.

Willyam Gendron staked the Clippers to a 1-0 lead with a late goal in the first, and Joel Plante upped the lead to 2-0 midway through the second period.

The Kings put on a push in the final 20 minutes to twice pull within a goal but Joel Plante’s second marker of the night and Kai Daniells empty netter cancelled out a pair of Karter McNarland tallies.

New Clipper goalie Aidan Campbell was strong when called upon making 28 saves, mostly in the final period.

The shots finished 30-28 for Powell River with Nanaimo going 0/1 on the man advantage and 2/3 killing penalties.

The Sept. 23 three stars were:

1) Joel Plante. 2) Karter McNarland 3) Aidan Campbell

The same two teams will battle Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. in Powell River and also in Nanaimo’s home opener on Sept. 30.
