Murder charge laid against Nanaimo man after Maffeo Sutton Park stabbing

Sep 9, 2022 | 2:34 PM

NANAIMO — A second-degree murder charge has been applied in relation to a late-night stabbing.

Mark Jayden Harrison, 19 years old from Nanaimo, has been charged with the death of a 29-year-old man at Maffeo Sutton Park around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Sep. 5.

Despite being released by police following the incident, he was re-arrested and appeared in court early Friday morning. He remains in police custody and his next in court on Tuesday, Sep. 20.

A 17-year-old boy who was arrested Monday night has not been charged but an investigation continues.

A third person, Aiden Matthew William Bell was also charged in connection to the incident. He faces two weapons charges including assault with a weapon.

Officers said at the time the stabbing it was apparently random and the result of some disagreement between two individuals and a group of youth.

Police said bear spray was used during the altercation, with the 29-year-old victim suffering ultimately fatal stab wounds and a 22-year-old also requiring medical attention.

“At this point we are satisfied there was no connection between the victim and the suspects. As to why the suspects would do this? That will form the basis of our investigation,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW on Tuesday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP members had Maffeo Sutton Park closed throughout Tuesday morning collecting evidence, ultimately re-opening around 2:30 p.m.

Additional and updated comments from police were requested by NanaimoNewsNOW but not provided, due to a media blackout from RCMP in respect to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.
