VIDEO: Training for a 135 kilometre hike with a four-year-old

Editor’s Note: This is the first in a three-part series from NanaimoNewsNOW reporter Ian Holmes as he explores local hikes.

NANAIMO — Later this month myself, girlfriend and our four-year-old daughter are flying out to England for quite the adventure.

We’re joining other family members on a week-long hike of Hadrian’s Wall in northern England.

The 135 kilometere trek connects the cities of Carlisle near the country’s west coast to Newcastle to Britain’s eastern shore.

Large sections of the wall still stands, which was a Roman-built fortification constructed about 2,000 years ago.

We’re not exactly roughing it as we’ll be staying at hotels along the way, however we intend to hike with our daughter for as much as possible during the week-long voyage.

When her tired little legs can’t take it any more, Raya will hitch a ride on a recently purchased carrier (she seems to enjoy it, but gets a little restless at times).

We recently tested the carrier intermittently at Westwood Lake, where it took us about two hours to round the six kilometer loop twice.

I figured I’d shoot some video of our preparation for this adventure. In the following two Sunday’s I’ll share a video of hikes up Mount Benson and to the Cottle Hill communications tower.
