NANAIMO — The longest-running reuse event in Nanaimo is making its return.

People living within Nanaimo city limits will have the chance to get rid of items they no longer use, and pick up some free stuff from their neighbours during Reuse Rendezvous, happening Aug. 13 and 14.

Taaj Daliran, the City of Nanaimo’s manager of sanitation, said the popular annual event is a win for everyone, including the environment.

“The life of these items would be extended, less material is going to be disposed of in our landfill, and because this material is going to have a longer life, less new material will be extracted, produced, transported, and distributed, and all of that energy and pollution caused by using that energy would be saved.”

Along with following the reduce, reuse, and recycle mantra, Daliran said it’s also a great way to bring the community together to support each other.

“It’s a culture, it’s building a community. The support is available to everybody, especially the people who need some of these items but are in a situation where it may not be affordable to them to buy new items. It’s building a community that everybody shares what they can with others.”

Items like unwanted toys, sporting goods, furniture, books, and bikes can put placed on the curb, along with a sign that says “FREE”.

Items should not block sidewalks or bike lanes.

Participants are told to remove leftover items by the morning of Monday, Aug 15.

Bargain hunters are reminded to take care when out searching for deals — drive slowly, watch for pedestrians, obey all traffic signs and park carefully.
