NANAIMO — A pair of Nanaimo teams came out on top at the senior women’s fastball provincial championship staged this past weekend at McGirr Sports Fields.

Nanaimo Southside won the gold medal in the ‘C’ division, while the Nanaimo Implants took home gold in the ‘D’ division.

A strong showing was also demonstrated by the Nanaimo Nighthawks, who won the ‘C’ division silver medal after bowing out to Nanaimo Southside 9-4 in the final.

Going out on top represented the end of an era for Nanaimo Southside, which plans to disband following 15 successful campaigns.

The Nighthawks advanced to the final after edging the Coquitlam Redblacks by one run in the semi-finals.

The ‘C’ division champions registered a perfect weekend of ball in sun-drenched north Nanaimo.

The important starting pitcher/back catcher combo of Camille Smith and Taylor Sampson paced Southside to the win in the final over the Nighthawks on Sunday, Aug 7.

In ‘D’ division action the Nanaimo Implants went a perfect 4-0, only allowing six runs throughout the tournament.
