Judge denies bail for accused Nanaimo murderer

NANAIMO — A woman charged with murdering her ex-boyfriend in Nanaimo lost her bid to be freed prior to going on trial.

Paris Jayanne Laroche, 26, was denied bail following a 35-minute decision read out by B.C. Supreme Court justice Elizabeth McDonald in Nanaimo on Thursday, July 28.

Laroche is charged with first degree murder in connection to the death of Sidney Joseph Mantee, 32.

Details of the bail hearing proceedings and judge’s decision are protected by a publication ban in order to maintain the integrity of future court proceedings.

Laroche was arrested on March 9, 2022 without incident and charges were approved the same day by the B.C. Prosecution Service.

She is also charged with the indecent handling of Mantee’s remains.

Mantee was the source of a historical missing persons investigation in which Nanaimo RCMP suspected foul play was involved.

In May 2021 Nanaimo RCMP revealed their investigators had moved ahead with numerous searches around Nanaimo.

Those searches included the apartment in which Laroche and Mantee shared together.

A preliminary inquiry for Laroche is scheduled for January 2023.

She has been in custody since March 9 and is currently locked up at Lower Mainland facility.

Laroche, who was born and raised in Nanaimo, has no prior criminal record.
